Holographic Display

National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) has announced that the institute successfully developed the electron holography method stereoscopic technology which enables the ultimate viewing zone angle of 15 degrees and 4 cm diagonal display size color video display .  In this development, by applying its own display technology to increase viewing area to high-resolution device with  3300  mega-pixels, the newly developed device is able to gain three time wider viewing zone angles than  conventional devices and about two times broader two times broader video  holographic display. It seems that 3D video display technology development is accelerated to bring us to a virtually "real" world without glasses. Source: NICT's news release (Japanese) 9/28/10

i3(Cube)Space

National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology of Japan (AIST) announced iCubeSpace, a system which enabled an operator to feel and touch to control a virtual obstacle on 3D display panel. According to the spokes person on the TV news, possible application areas will be ranging from TV gaming, training for surgical operations to virtually touching an art object displayed in an famous museum. The press release is only in Japanese so far.  In the meantime, a DigInfoTV picked up the news at CEDEC 2010 held in Yokohama last week. The TV news available on YouTube is here although it's only in Japanese, too. Source: AIST's New Release,   DigInfoTV news via YouTube 9/7/10

3D Viewer

3D Para Vision demonstrated here seems to be relatively simple technology, but looks pretty cool to provide viewers with virtual 3D movies or pictures. According to the president and CEO of the company that developed this system, its greatest advantage is to get audience to stop by the 3D screen to watch movies or pictures for 10 times longer than regular 2D screen. 9/8/08

3-D Modeling tool (Part 2)

Out of various applications of the rapid prototyping system, Projection Modeler, is reportedly field-proven to play very important roles in a research and development field of new medicines. Atomic coordinates being extracted from a pdb file (“ pdb ” stands for Protein Data Bank that is a repository for 3-D structural data of proteins and nucleic acid and that is internationally opened and public for anyone to access to), a 1.4 mm-radius ball is set in each atom position of a three-dimensional protein molecule structure while the ball size is magnified by 10-40 million times from the angstrom-size of the atom. The enlarged three-dimensional structure of the protein molecule is modeled by the above-mentioned Projection Modeler. Observing and clearly recognizing the protein molecule structure from the model, a medicine research-and-developer can design and create a new molecule structure of medicine which to respond to the protein molecule structure. This sounds great, doesn't it! T...

3D Modeling tool (Part 1)

There must be a few tools in the world to produce 3 dimensional models not only on the computer screen but also physically in your hands. However, it seems to me that the rapid-prototyping system, Projection Modeler is exceptionally unreal. Out of so many applications in the business field, the technology, which consists of the newly developed 3-D modelling software and hardware, give us some fan. The modified technology provides you with a capability to get a miniaturised 3-D copy of your own bust. What you have to do is to sit in a special booth for a few second, just as taking your photo in the booth. You'll get a 7-inch-height bust of your own, together with tinny dolls of your self if you wish. Autofact Inc., a Japanese software company jointly worked to develop the 3-D modeller with the hardware manufacturer. 12/11/07
